About Lisa Kagan

Lisa’s artistic journey began before she could talk, painting life-size paper mache birds with her dad at their home in Northern Virginia. When she was a teenager she spent long hours experimenting in their makeshift darkroom, amazed at how a moment could be forever immortalized in the alchemy of light and shadow. As a college student at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, she wrote and illustrated her first Family Heirloom Art book, honoring her grandfather's immigration story from Russia to the United States. In the summer of 2001, Lisa’s spirit of curiosity catalyzed her own migration to the west coast, deepening her reverence for the natural world—its simple gifts and infinite wisdom of design.

Through Lisa’s work in social service, art therapy and education she recognized that when people have an opportunity to tell their stories, it transforms their lives. They are better able to understand their past, gain confidence in their ability to address their present circumstances, and begin to envision their future. Lisa is currently the co-chair of the Portland Chapter of the Association of Personal Historians; a professional association dedicated to helping people preserve their life stories. In addition to running Lisa Kagan Designs, she is a practicing artist and writer. She just released her first book, Emergence, Poetry and Art by Lisa Kagan. Lisa brings her passion for personal storytelling, her vibrant palette, and her poetic inspiration to her clients, her students and the community at large.
